CONOR MULLIGAN

Conor Mulligan is an artist and lighting designer. His design work represents an ongoing exploration of light in live performance. 

Born in Dublin, Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day; at five years old Conor immigrated to the United States with his mother, father, and older brother. Eighteen years later he became an American citizen. Growing up in rural Maryland Conor found a creative outlet in theatre; a sandbox to explore the complexities of being human.

He designs lighting for stage productions in New York City as well as regionally throughout the United States. Internationally his work has been featured in the Despertaresimpulsa 2019 arts festival (Guadalajara Mexico) in collaboration with the Criro Collective, a Boston-based dance company.

Conor is a member of the design team at Joe's Pub. Other collaborations include Manuel Vignoulle-M/motions, NK&D, Ballet NEXT, Konverjdans, The Russian Arts Theater & Studio, AG!D, The Satellite Collective, BAM, Roberto Araujo, IndieWorks, Smith Street Stages, National Children's Chorus, The Little Orchestra Society (NY), Luna Stage (NJ), Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (MA), Bristol Riverside Theatre (PA), REP Stage, Iron Crow Theatre Company, Baltimore Theatre Project, Milburn Stone Theatre (MD), 1st Stage (VA), MOXIE Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, Cygnet Theatre (CA).

Conor's work at Cygnet Theatre has been nominated twice for the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Award for outstanding lighting design. First in 2014 for his design of Fool For Love and again in 2017 for his design of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds. In 2017 Conor won the Craig Noel Award for outstanding lighting design for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man- In-The-Moon Marigolds. Conor was nominated for a Helen Hayes award in Oustanding Lighting Design in 2020 for his work on Columbinus at 1st Stage (VA).

While primarily focusing on design work, Conor also works as a lighting design associate/assistant as well as a lighting coordinator. As a lighting coordinator, Conor has worked with ARMITAGE GONE! DANCE, recreating the work of Clifton Taylor, as well as with Jennifer Muller The Works for the 2018 and 2019 Women Create Festival of dance. Conor's assistant/associate lighting design experience includes; Broadway touring productions, international remounts, Off-Broadway, regional theatre, themed entertainment, Opera, site-specific productions, immersive escape rooms, corporate events, galas, and architectural. From 2016 to 2018, Conor was a full-time assistant for Ken Billington Associates, where he worked on a number of projects, including the first national tour of Waitress the musical.

Before working at Billington's studio, Conor was the Gilbert Hemsley intern with Lincoln Center Festival, The San Francisco Opera, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and The New York City Ballet.
